Saturday of each month to explore history and historical events through books. Each month a new book and topic will be explored, and you will learn facts about local history that relate to the story we read. This month’s book is If You Traveled in a Covered Wagon by Ellen Levine, read by Heather Farquhar. If you traveled west in a covered wagon
–Would you ride in the wagon for the whole trip?
–How would you cross rivers when there were no bridges?
–Without road signs, how would you know where you were? Listen to discover what it was like to be a pioneer and travel west in the 1840s.

This month’s selection: Outside, Inside by LeUyen Pham, will be read by: Heather Farquhar. Something strange happened on an unremarkable day just before the season changed. Everybody who was outside . . . went inside. Outside, it was quieter, wilder, and different. Inside, we laughed, we cried, and we grew. We remembered to protect the ones we love and love the ones who protect us. While the world changed outside, we became stronger on the inside and believed that someday soon spring would come again.

From Caldecott honoree LeUyen Pham, Outside, Inside is a moving picture book celebrating essential workers and the community coming together to face the challenges of the global COVID-19 pandemic.

Amelia Earhart: Courage in the Sky by Mona Kerby. Read by Intern, Kelsey Stahlnecker.

As a child, Amelia Earhart wondered why there were no heroines in her favorite adventure stories. She resolved to change that when she grew up. And so she did, becoming one of the pioneers of aviation. Not only was Amelia Earhart the first woman in the world to fly across the Atlantic Ocean, she was the first person to cross it twice. Her life became a great ad pioneers of aviation. Not only was Amelia Earhart the first woman in the world to fly across the Atlantic Ocean, she was the first person to cross it twice. Her life became a great adventure story—and a great mystery, too. In 1937, on an around-the-world flight, Amelia disappeared. Today, her courage and sprit remain an inspiration to everyone who flies or dreams of adventure.

Listen to learn about how Elizabeth Cady Stanton stood up and fought for what she believed in. From an early age, she knew that women were not given rights equal to men. But rather than accept her lesser status, Elizabeth went to college and later gathered other like-minded women to challenge the right to vote. Here is the inspiring story of an extraordinary woman who changed America forever because she would not take “no” for an answer.

Older children are of course welcome, too! This month’s selection: Helen Keller A Light for the Blind by Kathleen V. Kudlinski. Read by Intern Kelsey Stahlnecker. 

When Helen was growing up, there were no facilities to help handicapped students. Still, she learned to speak, read, and write, attended Radcliffe College, wrote multiple books, and lectured all over the world. It wasn’t enough to prove that she could do anything. Helen wanted other handicapped people to know that they could, too. This event will be recorded for later viewing on Shasta Historical Society’s YouTube Channel.

On August 28, 1963, on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial during the March on Washington, Martin Luther King gave one of the most powerful and memorable speeches in our nation’s history. The themes of equality and freedom for all are not only relevant today, 50 years later, but also provide young readers with an important introduction to our nation’s past. The Shasta Historical Society hosts a history themed story time on Facebook the second Saturday of each month. About 1/2 hour in length, it is appropriate for children ten and under. Older children are of course welcome, too! This month’s selection: Little People, BIG DREAMS Rosa Parks by Lisbeth Kaiser, read by Kelsey Farquhar. This book is one of a bestselling series of books that explore the lives of outstanding people, from designers and artists to scientists and activists, all of whom achieved incredible things, yet each began life as a child with a dream. Rosa Parks grew up in Alabama, where she learned to stand up for herself at an early age. In 1955, she refused to give up her seat to a white man on a segregated bus, sparking the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Her courageous decision had a huge impact on civil rights, eventually leading to the end of segregation on public transport. This event has been recorded for later viewing on Shasta Historical Society’s YouTube Channel.

May Second Saturday Story Time

About 1/2 hour in length, it is appropriate for children ten and under, but all children are welcome. This month’s selection, The Story of Ruby Bridges by Robert Coles, will be read by Society Intern, Kelsey Stahlnecker. 

In 1960 six-year-old Ruby Bridges and her family moved from Mississippi to New Orleans in search of a better life. Listen to learn about Gordon Parks, who is most famous for being the first black director in Hollywood. But before he made movies and wrote books, he was a poor African American looking for work. When he bought a camera, his life changed forever. This is the story of how, with a single photograph, a self-taught artist got America to take notice. Born enslaved, Harriet Tubman rose to become one of the most successful, determined, and well-known conductors of the Underground Railroad. With her family’s love planted firmly in her heart, Harriet looked to the North Star for guidance–and its light helped guide her way out of slavery.
